Abstract

The growing demand for low-latency computing in derivatives markets challenges the traditional approach of deploying monolithic applications on dedicated data center clusters. Cloud-native architectures offer a promising alternative, owing to the flexibility, scalability, and resilience the cloud provides. For latency-sensitive workloads, however, low latency is not merely a requirement to be met — cloud-native design principles can also drive improvements in the underlying computing model itself. These benefits include decomposing monolithic applications into microservices deployed within a service mesh, leveraging on-demand, pay-per-use resources to optimize costs during off-peak traffic, and improving computational efficiency through load balancing across cloud availability zones.

At the same time, the growing operational resilience risks associated with cloud infrastructure — even when architected appropriately — require organizations and their business partners to reconsider their risk appetite for outsourcing critical workloads to the cloud. While insurance can offset losses from isolated incidents, it offers little protection if an outage forces an organization to halt trading for an extended period; in such cases, intelligent failover or brokerage mechanisms are essential to sustaining continuity of service. Examined more closely, these architectural principles not only enable scaling but can also strengthen the underlying efficiency and performance of the models themselves.
