Healthcare is increasingly adopting cloud-enabled digital technologies and services. In tandem, data ecosystems are becoming key enablers of innovation. However, health data pipelines rarely leverage cloud-native architectural characteristics. The design, implementation, and management of cloud-native healthcare data pipelines can enhance scaling, resilience, robustness, and interoperability; facilitate cost and resource optimization; and foster cross-organizational data sharing while fulfilling data-related legalities, ethics, norms, and regulations. Towards that end, a cloud-native healthcare data pipeline architecture is elaborated. The architecture defines a core set of design patterns and critical layers, together with appropriate governance mechanisms. Intelligent data pipelines with cloud-native properties are then explored that process claims data as they move through the healthcare system, specifically enabling automated adjudication, fraud detection, and pre-adjudication eligibility checks. Further, cloud-native pipelines are discussed that facilitate population-health analytics and modeling; services enablement; and adherence to region-, country-, or organization-specific health-data-ecosystem semantics.
Demand for cloud-native technologies is escalating across business domains for both development and operational workloads. The shift towards cloud-enabled digital services in the healthcare sector is no different. Health data ecosystems are moving to the cloud, allowing health organizations to extend their on-premises infrastructures and services to the cloud, and enabling vendors to update and securely enhance cloud-native solutions offered to their customers. Multiple large hospitals and vendors—such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google—have introduced dedicated cloud-based health-data ecosystems, with some focusing on closed relationships best suited for established customers and others opening up cloud platforms for third-party software and services. These trends are placing healthcare data at the center of digital transformation.
